In some cases, the infection gets cleared by its own. The infection gets healed itself by using OTC (over-the-counter) pain relief ear drops, OTC medications for fever like ibuprofen or acetaminophen or by applying warm water bottle or warm cloth to the affected area.

Antibiotics are given if even taking these treatments, the symptoms exist. Antibiotics like amoxicillin, acetaminophen or NSAIDs are commonly recommended.

If the condition is severe, a surgery known as myringotomy is performed. In this, an opening is made from the eardrum to allow draining of the fluid from the middle ear.
