Otitis Media; Acute
Otitis media; acute can be referred as viral or bacterial infection of the middle ear. The infection normally takes place in the middle ear which becomes inflamed. Behind the eardrum, the middle ear is located. Due to the infection, the ear becomes red with bulging eardrum. The condition is common in children as compared to adults. In adults, swimmers experience the condition more.

In some cases, the infection gets cleared by its own. The infection gets healed itself by using OTC (over-the-counter) pain relief ear drops, OTC medications for fever like ibuprofen or acetaminophen or by applying warm water bottle or warm cloth to the affected area. Antibiotics are given if even taking these treatments, the symptoms exist. Antibiotics like amoxicillin, acetaminophen or NSAIDs are commonly recommended. If the condition is severe, a surgery known as myringotomy is performed. In this, an opening is made from the eardrum to allow draining of the fluid from the middle ear.
